How Insurance Works for Auto Accident Injuries

Oftentimes patients will come into our office with injuries sustained in an auto collision holding
the claim number from the auto insurance company from the person that hit them (at fault
party). It just seems to make sense that since they were at fault we should be utilizing their
insurance. However, for most cases this is not the correct way to proceed. We use yours!
Oregon law dictates that all motorists have auto insurance. Under every auto insurance policy is
something called Personal Injury Protection. Every policy has this in Oregon automatically.
Usually it’s about $15,000.00 that can be used toward any injuries one sustained in an
automobile collision. If you’re in an auto accident you do want to obtain the insurance info of
the other driver and when you report the accident to your insurer, you will most likely be asked
for the other driver’s insurance information. Your insurance company will then provide a claim
number for you. It’s this number you come to the doctor’s office with to be seen for injuries
caused by the accident. The insurance company of YOUR vehicle will be the one billed and then
they will get reimbursed by the at fault insurance carrier.
Also, it’s a good idea that if you’ve been hurt in the accident, you mention this while you’re on
the phone reporting your claim to your insurer. They will then send you a Personal Injury
Protection Application form. It’s a pretty short form that will be needed in order for your bills
to be paid to your medical provider. Additionally, it is needed for you to be compensated for
any work you may have missed or will miss due to the injury Many times our office can assist
with the form.
